NEW E-SCOOTER LAW: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Data news: 28/05/2026

In recent years we have witnessed an increase in the number of e-scooters in our cities, especially as a shared means of transport among younger people.

With the aim to hold riders more responsible towards third parties and increase the overall safety of the streets the Italian Government decided to take further measures to regulate the use of e-scooters.

Following the Law Decree 210 of June 27,2025, starting May 16th 2026 all e-scooters must display the mandatory identification mark which serves as the scooter’s official licence plate. Issued by the Motorization office, the mark can be requested online using either the SPID or CIE (Italy’s digital identity systems) at a cost of approximately € 35.

The next deadline to mark in the calendar is July 16th 2026, when compulsory insurance will take effect, requiring each e-scooter to carry a yearly third-party liability insurance.

However, it is always important to remember the other aspects of the law that govern the use of e-scooters including the need to wear a helmet, the ban on carrying passengers, and the requirement to have indicators and brake lights.

Failure to comply with the law could result in a fine ranging from €100 to €800.
